Swirling Indigo Seaweed

$3,000.00

“Swirling Indigo Seaweed” was inspired by the kelp washed up on a Central California beach. The seaweed almost dances as it is brought onto the sand and then relaxes into beautiful designs.

I used a hemp/organic cotton blend fabric in its natural color for the background.  The appliques are cut in three single pieces in an indigo hemp/organic cotton fabric, with bamboo batting between the layers.  The quilt is entirely sewn by hand with the thread weaving through all the layers of the quilt. This gives the back of the quilt the same design on the back with the stitching. I was inspired by the Hawaiian method of echo quilting for the background. The binding edge was sewn on my machine on the front side, then the binding is then turned under and handstitched on the reverse side.

I entered this quilt in the Pajaro Valley Quilt show in February 2024, and I’m thrilled to say that it won the Judges Choice Award! I have included the pictures of the quilt at the show and the ribbon! Exciting!!

I started this quilt several years ago, but never seemed to find the time to finish it. Because of the length of time it’s been in process, when I recently completed it, I decided to launder in my home washer and dryer. Laundering makes a hand-stitched quilt softer, making it reminiscent of our grandma’s quilts, but because it is sewn with a running back stitch, the fabric puffs up, slightly shrinking the dimensions. This can be avoided by hanging the quilt instead of putting it in the dryer.

If you are interested in making a quilt inspired by any of my designs for your own personal use, feel free to contact me for more information on the design, fabrics, or techniques.  Hand quilting is a traditional method of stitching that gives an amazing texture to your quilt. If there is anything I can share with you, I would be happy to assist you in making this magic!  However, this is my quilt design, and you need my written permission to use my design for mass production or commercial sale.
