Foggy mornings walking on the Central California beach, I hear the sea gulls crying out overhead…..the inspiration for “Flight”.

The background fabric is a soft grey organic cotton voile fabric with five sea gulls appliques are made of hemp/organic cotton. Between the two background layers of voile is organic cotton batting. The appliques are hand cut and hand stitched to the background, with echo quilting around the birds, blending together to cover the quilt. The binding matches the background to accentuate the birds.

This quilt has been donated to GalaBid to raise the funds to make a film about Phyllis Lyons and Del Martin, women who were a powerful part of queer history as well as Phyllis's life and her amazing queer caregivers, until her death, April 9. 2020, This project is so important because we need understand each other and our herstory in order to have compassion for each other. Celtic Turtle is an original design, inspired by showing another quilt at the International Quilt Festival of Ireland in Galway, Ireland.

In keeping with the artist's commitment to the environment, this quilt is made using sustainable fabrics. The applique is continuous bias to form the turtle, then hand stitched to the background. The background is then hand quilted using the echo quilting technique, inspired by traditional Hawaiian methods.
