To replicate the texture and the feel of the starfish, there is an extra layer of batting under the hemp/tencel applique. The applique is stitched to the hemp/organic cotton pillow with an additional batting between the fabric layers. Then texture is added with both hand stitching and French knots. The background around the applique, is hand quilted using an echo quilting technique, inspired by Hawaiian quilting. The back of the pillow is hemp/organic cotton fabric, with buttonholes and coconut shell buttons so that the pillow cover can be removed for laundering. The insert is custom made using organic cotton muslin, filled with organic kapok.
