We’ve all walked on the beach and found a beautiful shell that we’ve picked up as a treasured memento.

This pillow was inspired by one of these times when I picked up a shell, brought it home and made a pattern of it.

This white linen pillow starts by cutting two layers of handkerchief linen fabric, then traced the shell outline and ribbings on one layer of fabric and then stitching the lines using a blue grey thread. The next step to make the shell texture stand out, is to use a French quilting method called Boutis. This is done by running yarn between the two layers and between the stitched lines, causing the pattern to puff out and making the “rib” of the shell. I love the result.

The backing is also handkerchief linen with a split backing with two ties, so that the kapok filled insert can be removed to launder the pillowcase.

Linen is an incredible fabric, but it will wrinkle when used or laundered. If you want it as smooth as possible, I suggest hand washing this pillow cover, hang drying, smoothing it flat with your hands, and possibly using a steam iron on it. Or enjoy the natural texture of the fabric, which has already been put through my washer and dryer.
